Z-Pool

4 hour exposure; Full Moon reflecting on smooth, moving water
Mill Creek, Utah

Z-Pool was made in the fall of 2007 in Mill Creek, near Moab.  I spent 2 nights camped in "Right Hand" about the time of  the full moon.  This image is a 4 hour exposure--looking almost directly down on a fast moving, smooth pool of water.  As the full moon rises high in the sky, it glares on the bottom edge of the pool.  Over 4 hours, it arcs above, reflecting itself on the water, and finally it creates the sharp, sickle reflection at the top of the pool.  Exposed on 4x5" film, the negative was scanned and printed on 100% cotton art paper.
I am experimenting with silver prints of this image.

Here's an example of how the moon reflection tracks across a pool over time.  Light wind and objects on the surface of a pool have unexpected results--sometimes creating very interesting highlight patterns.

Video made with a series of still photos from my digital camera.

My tent set up above the creek:  beneath dazzling stars and a full moon.

I've used this trusty Whisper-Light stove from MSR for well over a decade--it still works great.
